What is a website? Pages, domains and hosting
A website is a collection of web resources presented under one or more addresses, usually with related pages and a common purpose. A domain name, a hosting server and a web page are related parts, but they are not interchangeable. Understanding the difference helps when publishing or troubleshooting a site.
Website, page and domain
A web page is an individual document or application view. A website links many such views through navigation and shared structure. The domain is part of the address people enter; it can point to different services and may be registered separately from the hosting account. One server can host many websites, and one site can use several servers.
A URL adds the scheme, host, path and possibly a query to identify a resource. For example, HTTPS tells the browser to use an encrypted connection, while the path selects a page. A domain alone does not guarantee that any website is configured at its root.
How a visit reaches the site
The browser asks DNS for an address associated with the host. It connects to a server, negotiates TLS for HTTPS and sends an HTTP request. The server returns HTML or application data; the page may then load CSS, JavaScript and images from the same or other hosts.
Changes to DNS, hosting or the site itself can each affect availability. A DNS record can be correct while the service is stopped. A working server can still return an error for one URL. A valid certificate proves a secured connection to a name, not the trustworthiness of all content on the site.
Planning and diagnosing
Before publishing, choose clear page structure, mobile-friendly presentation and accessible navigation. Keep content current, use descriptive titles and protect administration accounts. Back up the site and database according to the hosting setup; ownership of a domain does not automatically include a backup of files.
If visitors cannot open the site, check the exact URL, DNS answer, server status, HTTP response and TLS certificate in that order. Compare another network or browser if necessary. Note the time and error message when asking a hosting provider for help.
