How accurate is IP geolocation?

IP geolocation approximately associates a network address with a country, region, city or provider. Its accuracy depends on the database and the connection type. A location result is neither a person’s coordinates nor proof of their physical whereabouts.

Where does the estimated location come from?

Data providers combine address allocation records, network measurements and other voluntarily gathered signals. An allocation record may identify an operator’s office rather than a subscriber’s home. Mobile networks and large providers may route traffic through gateways in other cities. Reassigned address blocks also reach different databases on different schedules.

Two services can disagree about the city while both identify the country or network operator correctly. A database’s confidence or radius field describes its own estimate and methodology; it is not the measured position of your device. Do not turn a single lookup into a street address or use it as sole evidence in an investigation.

Why might your result look wrong?

A VPN or proxy reveals its exit address to the destination, not the original network address. Under CGNAT, several customers may share one public IPv4 address. A mobile provider can reuse addresses rapidly. Equipment relocation, provider changes and range transfers may leave stale records. The IPv4 and IPv6 addresses of the same device can even produce different locations.

First inspect the address and protocol family with the IP information tool. Compare more than one source and note the database update date where provided. Network operators can generally request corrections from the data provider or address range operator. Changing a website’s DNS record will not by itself correct a visitor address’s location entry.

How should the estimate be used?

For language or regional content, let visitors correct the automatic choice. For security, location can be one signal alongside account history and additional verification. Blocking by city alone may reject a genuine visitor because of stale data, roaming or a corporate gateway. Accuracy also varies by region, network type and database; never promise a universal city-level precision.

Record the exact lookup time, address, connection type and data source when reporting a mismatch. If a subscriber must be identified through legal process, a public location database is insufficient: addresses can be reassigned or shared, and provider records are handled separately. Avoid publishing complete addresses and other personal details without a clear need.
